The Royal National Lifeboat Institution have issued advice for keeping safe in the sea, after a man got into difficulty within Carrickfergus harbour.
A man onboard a 22ft yacht within Carrickfergus harbour got into danger after the vessel lost all power.
The incident happened on Thursday evening.
Belfast Coastgaurd requested that Banger RNLI volunteers assist the man.
The report was made at around 9.15pm on Thursday.
Bangor Lifeboat Launch Authority authorised the launch of the inshore lifeboat Ruby Robinson shortly after.
A volunteer crew of four made their way to Carrickfergus Harbour, where they found a man onboard a small yacht anchored in the north-east corner of the harbour.
The man was confirmed to be safe and well.
With the tide rising, lifeboat helm James Gillespie decided the safest option was to tow the yacht into deeper water before bringing it to the Marine Projects pontoon.
There, the crew were met by Portmuck Coastguard Rescue Team, who helped secure the vessel.
Speaking to the Irish News after the rescue, volunteer helm James Gillespie said “Always have a means for calling and signalling for help and ensure you know how to use it.
“Learn how to start, run and maintain your engine. Always carry tools and spares.”
A RNLI spokesperson issued advice on how to stay safe when out on the water:
- Always wear an appropriate lifejacket.
- Always carry a means of calling and signalling for help.
- Have an emergency plan and give everyone onboard a safety briefing, including the location and use of equipment, such as the spare kill cord for powerboats.
- Get the right level of training for your craft.
- Always check the weather and tide times.
- Make sure someone ashore knows your plans and who to call if you don’t return on time.
- Always operate your boat at a speed appropriate to the weather conditions and your surroundings.
- Check your engine before use.
